November (21st): B&F Day

Topic: Understanding the International Building Code 2021 - Chapter 10 – Means of Egress

Course Description:

This one-day training series structured for municipal inspectors, design professionals, contractors, and engineers. This course administers comprehensive instruction and illustration of the use, application, intent and rationale of the means of egress requirements.

This course incorporates direct instruction and meaningful explanations and problem solving. It covers all parts of a buildings egress system from access to the public way. The course utilizes lecture with presentation and problem solving to illustrate the code requirements.

Learning Objectives:

1.       Discern and examine the Scope and Application and Administration and Enforcement of the code, Definitions of terms specified in the code, such as occupant load, occupant load factor minimum required width, net and gross as they relate to means of egress.

2.       The student will be able to calculate occupant loads, minimum exit requirements for doors, corridors and stairs.

3.       The student will be able to explain other egress requirements such as minimum travel distance, exit illumination and exit signs.

4.   Identify and relate insight needed to evaluate and execute plan review, inspection and code application during the inspection and design process.

5. Recognize and relate the specific impact of obstructions, fire protection systems and other hazards   based on their on their impact on the egress system.

Presented by: Rich Piccolo

Chief Managing Employee of the Building & Fire Code Academy, Richard A. Piccolo brings over 30 years of knowledge, experience and enthusiasm to BFCA. A Vietnam War veteran, Mr. Piccolo began his civilian career as a firefighter with the Elk Grove Village Fire Department in 1971 where he utilized his knowledge to conduct community education programs and fire protection code enforcement. During his 18 years as a firefighter, lieutenant and public educator, Mr. Piccolo also became involved in other construction disciplines by conducting building plan review and mastering model codes and standards, understanding the positive impact of code compliance.

Among his many achievements, Mr. Piccolo holds a degree in Fire Science and has earned the top certification in his field as an International Code Council Master Code Professional. He holds certificates in building, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection codes.

Recognized nationwide for his contributions to building code enforcement, he has served and continues to serve in many distinguished leadership positions within the construction industry and related associations and has been honored with many awards for extraordinary industry service.

As past President of the Illinois Council of Code Administrators, Mr. Piccolo continues to participate in code organizations nationwide. He has authored numerous training courses taught nationwide. He also served for 8 years as an adjunct faculty member at William Rainey Harper College in Palatine, Ill., where he taught building code and fire science courses. He also is an appointed court-certified expert in building and construction codes.

Topic: Course Title: Commercial Kitchen Hoods – Plan Review (morning)

Course Description:

This half-day course will introduce commercial kitchen exhaust hood systems. Participants will learn about design principles and theories behind the code. The course will take participants through the plan review process for commercial kitchen exhaust hood systems. This course will assist code officials, design professionals, contractors and builders understand the ICC codes regulating commercial kitchen exhaust hood systems.

Objectives:

*Understand how commercial kitchen exhaust hood systems operate

*Identify code requirements for commercial kitchen exhaust hood systems

*Be able to perform basic commercial kitchen exhaust hood & duct plan reviews

Presented by: Seth R Sommer, MCP, CBO

Seth Sommer has spent more than 25 years in the construction, design, and code enforcement industry.  He has worked in both private and public sectors in high level leadership and management positions. He has served as Building Official for several communities and has a wealth of practical and meaningful experience.

Seth currently holds over 20 ICC certifications, some of which include Master Code Professional and Certified Building Official. Seth is also certified by the Illinois State Board of Education to perform inspections and plan reviews for all disciplines.

Seth now works as Vice President for a third-party plan review and inspection company. He has performed thousands plan reviews and inspections. Prior to this, Seth was the Director of Construction for a top Midwest real estate and development company, served as the Building Official and as Manager of Construction & Development Services for the City of Rockford, IL, worked for two architecture firms as a project manager, and was an adjunct instructor at Rock Valley College, teaching in the Building Construction Management Program for several years.

Seth is happily married with two wonderful adult daughters and resides in Rockford.

Topic: Course Title: What every building inspector should know about Fire Sprinkler & Fire Alarm Systems (afternoon)

Course Description:

This is a half-day course that will walk participants through the basics of fire sprinkler systems and fire alarm systems. The course will discuss how changes in the building design can affect the fire sprinkler and fire alarm systems. Participants will learn common code violations and how to identify them.

Objectives:

*Understand basic fire protection principles

*Help inspectors understand how changes to the building can affect these systems

*Be able to identify code violations

Michael Carnduff has been with Fire Safety Consultants Inc. for over 6 years. He is the Field Services Supervisor and conducts plan reviews daily. As the Field Service Supervisor, he is responsible for overseeing all inspections and procedures for FSCI. Mike holds a NICET Level 2 certificate for Fire Alarm Systems as well a Level 2 NICET certification in water-based systems layout.

This is a half-day course will introduce NFPA 855: Standard for the Installation of Stationary Energy Storage Systems.  Discussions will be centered on Lithium-ion and Lead Acid batteries in residential and commercial buildings.

Robert Hattier is the Director of Renewable Energy for IBEW Local 134. He also serves as the Executive Director for the Illinois IBEW Renewable Energy Fund, a State of Illinois grant funded Workforce Development Organization authorized under the Future Energy Jobs Act (FEJA).

 

Bob has over 20 years of experience in the solar energy and adjacent technology industries. Since 2008, Bob has been teaching courses on Solar, Energy Storage, and Electric Vehicle Charging Systems throughout the Midwest.

Mechanical Insulation: Energy Efficiency, Health Safety Identification and Firestopping

Course Objectives:

It will touch on energy savings on mechanical systems through results of past energy assessments (figures derived from the DOE), diagrams on expectations of properly insulated piping systems and equipment (National a Commercial and Industrial Insulation Standards) with real world photos. The second part of our presentation will discuss Health Safety expectations with regards to encapsulation of rooms for hazardous removal (asbestos removal) as well as firestopping application.

There was quite a bit of activity in the 2020 NEC® concerning definitions. In this interactive online course, we will cover new definitions added, and existing definitions that have been revised or relocated in the 2020 NEC®. We will also review new and revised requirements for equipment installation, labeling, marking and working space.

  • This seminar addresses the critical concepts of the 2018 IBC regarding fire and life safety issues. These concepts provide a basis for the correct use of the code in building planning, classification of buildings and occupancies, fire-resistance-rated construction, fire protection systems and means of egress. The content addresses issues that are necessary for many designs and plan review decisions.   • Michael Mannan is currently the Director of Home Environmental Health with the City of Milwaukee’s Health Department. In his current role, he oversees compliance with construction codes, fire codes, local, state, and federal requirements involving the built environment and pragmatic solutions for funding and remediation of environmental hazards in buildings undergoing significant renovation. He is a Registered Sanitarian, International Code Council Nationally Certified Fire Marshal (FM), Certified Building Official (CBO), and Certified Housing Code Official (CHCO).

    Prior to joining the Health Department, Michael spent 18+ years in code enforcement, permitting, inspection, and licensure strategy and implementation in Milwaukee’s Building Inspection department. Mr. Mannan has been a committee member of various City Committees including the Abandoned and Foreclosed Home Committee, Building Variance Committee, and the Zoning Code Technical Committee with the City of Milwaukee. Aside from municipal management, Michael Mannan is also an Adjunct Instructor for the International Code Council nationally and Building and Fire Code Academy regionally for architectural plan review, permitting, and inspection. Mr. Mannan also serves as an Expert Witness for premise liability and faulty design litigation involving health and life safety hazards for national law firms.

During his 20 years in the solar industry, Bob has been involved with numerous renewable energy projects ranging from off grid cabins to residential, commercial and utility scale interactive systems. Bob has been teaching courses on Solar, Energy Storage, Electric Vehicle Charging and Green Building since 2008 and has offered courses throughout the Midwest region. Bob, a City of Chicago Supervising Electrician, holds many industry specific credentials including NABCEP’s PV Installation Professional, PV Technical Sales Professional and PV System Inspector certifications. Additionally, he is the only IREC Certified PV Master Trainer in the Midwest. Bob’s dedication to advancing the renewable energy industry can be seen in his involvement on several Board of Directors (NABCEP, MREA), committees (Solar Ready vets, National Clean Energy Workforce Alliance, Climate Jobs Illinois), education development projects (Electrical Training Alliance PV, EVITP, ESAMTAC), and allied professional training (IREC PV Inspection, Firefighter Safety and PV, Solar Plan Review and Inspection).

  • Solar is the fastest growing form of energy in the world. As we see adoption in IL, there are a lot of pieces to how it is designed, installed and incentivized. The presentation will cover the basics of residential solar energy systems as well as the installation process, current state and federal financial incentives, and how to get started.
