Course Title: Codes and Standards for Battery Energy Storage Systems (All Day)

Course Description:   

This presentation will cover relevant National Electrical Code and other NFPA and UL Standards as they relate to Battery Energy Storage Systems.

Objectives:

  • Detail all Codes and Standards relevant to Battery Energy Storage Systems currently

enforced and those under development.

  • Identify overlap among the applicable Codes and Standards

  • Discuss differences between UL 9540 A, UL 9540B, and CSA 800 fire tests

  • Review and example UL 9540A Thermal Runaway Fire Propagation Test Report

  • Explain how this example report applies to the 2023 and 2026 editions of NFPA 855

  • Discuss future developments in the BESS Codes and Standards ecosystem

Presented by: Robert Hattier

Presenter Bio: Robert Hattier is the Director of Renewable Energy for IBEW Local 134. He also serves as the Executive Director for the Illinois IBEW Renewable Energy Fund, a State of Illinois grant funded Workforce Development Organization authorized under the Future Energy Jobs Act (FEJA).

Bob has over 20 years of experience in the solar energy and adjacent technology industries. Since 2008, Bob has been teaching courses on Solar, Energy Storage, and Electric Vehicle Charging Systems throughout the Midwest.

Bob holds several industry specific credentials and licenses. Bob’s dedication to advancing the renewable energy industry can be seen in his involvement with several organizations as a Board Member, his codes and standards development committee appointments, his creation of industry specific curriculum, and his allied professional training initiatives.
