Course Title: Introduction to High Piled Combustible Storage and Racking Systems (Morning)

Course Description:   

The course is based on the 2021 edition of the International Fire Code.

Objectives:

*Hazard Identification and Classification:

·         You'll learn how to identify what counts as a high-piled storage area and classify the goods inside to understand the true fire hazard. You'll learn more about racking systems and code compliant arrangements.

*Analysis of Protection Systems:

·         You'll be able to verify that the building has the right fire safety systems, like automatic sprinklers, for the specific items being stored.

*Compliance and Field Verification:

·         You'll gain the confidence to walk through a facility and spot the most common code violations, from racking issues to blocked egress routes. You'll be able to perform plan reviews applying the knowledge learned in this course.

Presenter Bio:

Seth Sommer has spent more than 25 years in the construction, design, and code enforcement industry.  He has worked in both private and public sectors in high level leadership and management positions. He has served as Building Official for several communities and has a wealth of practical and meaningful experience.

Seth currently holds over 20 ICC certifications, some of which include Master Code Professional and Certified Building Official. Seth is also certified by the Illinois State Board of Education to perform inspections and plan reviews for all disciplines.

Seth now works as Vice President for a third-party plan review and inspection company. He has performed thousands plan reviews and inspections. Prior to this, Seth was the Director of Construction for a top Midwest real estate and development company, served as the Building Official and as Manager of Construction & Development Services for the City of Rockford, IL, worked for two architecture firms as a project manager, and was an adjunct instructor at Rock Valley College, teaching in the Building Construction Management Program for several years.

Seth is happily married with two wonderful adult daughters and resides in Rockford.

Course Title: Wet Chemical Extinguishing Systems (Afternoon)

Course Description:   

This course discusses the requirements for kitchen hood wet chemical suppression systems.  The course is based on the 2021 edition of the International Building Code, International Fire Code, International Mechanical and the 2021 edition of NFPA 17A.  This course is ideal for system designers, engineers, installers, inspectors, and fire service and building authorities.

Objectives:

* We’ll discuss the requirements of NFPA 17A and manufacturer’s installation manuals for the design, installation, operation, testing, inspection and maintenance activities.

* We’ll go over the wet chemical extinguishing system plan review process with examples of the most common mistakes and missing information.

* We’ll also cover inspection steps and procedures for these types of systems.

Presenter Bio:

Matt Davis has been with Fire Safety Consultants for over 25 years. Back in 1997, Matt was hired as the company’s 5th employee, handling simple fire alarm and sprinkler plan reviews. Over the years, he took on larger plan review projects and became involved with conducting field inspections. In 2004, he was promoted to Senior Fire Protection Consultant, being able to complete plan reviews and inspections for any and all fire protection systems, including kitchen hood and clean agent systems. In 2022, Matt was promoted to Fire Protection and EPR Supervisor. Leading our team of dedicated fire protection plan reviewers and heading up FSCI’s newest service of Electronic Plan Review.

Matt holds an associate degree in Applied Science, NICET level III certifications in water-based layout and fire alarms, as well as being an ICC preferred Provider Instructor.
